Who Was Abram? How Did God Change His Life?

Abram was born approximately born somewhere between 1852-1872BC. His father was a fella called Terah and was the youngest of three siblings. We get to see Abram in Genesis 12, where we see God’s promise to Abram. This promise being that he will make a great nation. This is the start of many promises to Abram. When God called Abram to leave his home and move to Canaan, he was married to a woman called Sarai. When Abram moved he was 75 years old. When they arrived at Egypt, Abram said to Sarai that he would call her his sister otherwise he would die and they would take her because she was smoking hot (Genesis 12:11-13). But because Abram and Sarai lied and didn’t trust God’s protection, God sent terrible disease to the kingdom because of it (Genesis 12:17). Later on, God spoke to Abram again in a vision and said he will defend him and to not be afraid (Genesis 15:1).

Eventually God changes Sarai name to Sarah (which means Princess) and promised a son. God promised she would be the mother of many nations (Genesis 17:16). He also changed the name of Abram to Abraham which means the father of many nations. Looking back at Gods promise to Abram earlier on in Genesis we see that God hasn’t forgotten that he will make great nations from Abram/Abraham. God promised to Abraham a child with Sarah, which still hadn’t happened at the age of 100 and 90. Abraham once again looked to himself and said he wouldn’t be able to do it. This seems to be a constant challenge with Abraham, God promises something and he doubts whether he can do it or not. He looks to himself to see if he will be able to get through it. God promises Abraham to be the father of nations, yet he looks to himself to see if he can do it. God promises a son for Abraham with Sarah, and Abraham looks to himself to if he can do it. God even changes Abraham’s name to put the promise of God centre of who Abraham is and he still doubts whether he can do it. God changed Abraham’s life by simply sticking with him and fulfilling the promises that he gave to him. God didn’t give a promise and then not complete it or give the promise only to take it back. God said to Abraham that he was going to have a son and guess what…Abraham did. God said that he would be the father of many nations and he was through his sons, Isaac and Ishmael. During these times it was Abraham who lacked faith in God, lacked focus on God’s big picture and who he really is.

If only Abraham could have taken his eyes off himself and fixed of God could he have seen what God wanted to do with him. Sometimes we can be like that, we can say God can’t use me for whatever reason it may be, but as we are on this side of the bible in the New Testament, all we need to do is take our eyes off ourselves and if God has promised something to us, he will fullfill it. We need to look to him, look to Jesus on the cross and say I can do all things through him.
